60 hours of the Turkmen transit visa remain to us. Excited we start in the old silk road town Merv.
After a month in Iran, a whole new adventure awaits us: we can travel through Turkmenistan for five days. Already after the first few minutes in Ashgabat it becomes clear: "It is different here!"
Ashgabat, the natural gas craters of Darvaza, the Yangikala Canyon, Turkmenbashi, Gonur Depe (Merv, Mary) - Turkmensitan has many attractions. Some are rather bizarre ...
And suddenly the deep black earth beneath me glittered in the brightest colors imaginable. Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, lies at my feet.
The conditions were simple: the xenophobic Turkmen government granted me the grace period of five days in the form of a so-called transit visa, with which I was allowed to cycle through the country from Iran to Uzbekistan without the travel guide needed for longer stays. Five days for nearly 500 kilometers - that sounded quite feasible given my usual daily average of 100 kilometers; I would not have headwind for five days, I thought.
